High-Impact Tutoring Talking Points

  • High-impact tutoring leads to substantial learning gains for students by supplementing (but not replacing) students’ classroom experiences.
  • High-impact tutoring responds to individual needs and complements students’ existing curriculum.
  • Tutoring in these programs is completed by another trained adult who will work hand-in-hand with us, the student’s primary educator, to support student learning.
  • COVID-19 caused extended disruptions for all students and low-income, Black and Latinx students bore a disproportionate cost. High-impact tutoring is an evidence-based way that qualifies for Covid-relief funding to help these students accelerate their learning.
  • A review of almost 200 studies found that high-dosage tutoring (another term for high-impact tutoring) — delivered more than three days per week or at a rate of at least 50 hours over 36 weeks — is one of the few school-based interventions with demonstrated large, positive effects on both math and reading.
  • Funding sources including ESSER and Title funding can support programs like this. Please see more details on funding options here.
  • The National Student Support Accelerator (NSSA) launched in early 2021 by Brown University’s Annenberg Institute for School Reform to equalize access to quality tutoring.
  • NSSA resources are available to help us make research-informed decisions as we build a high-impact tutoring program, including:
