Senior Research Data Analyst

The SCALE initiative of the Stanford Accelerator for Learning, housed at Stanford Graduate School of Education is seeking a Senior Research Data Analyst to work on our National Student Support Accelerator (NSSA) team. The SCALE initiative works to equalize and improve educational opportunities for students by supporting implementation of the most promising educational practices. One such project is the NSSA, a project begun in response to the pandemic and addressing the learning and emotional needs of students. It has expanded into a research, strategic advising, and engagement program aimed at increasing students’ access to the individualized supports they need to thrive. This position will provide data management support for several fast-paced research projects for the NSSA. 

What You’ll Do:

The Senior Research Data Analyst, working with the Director of Research, faculty lead and senior research associate(s) will develop infrastructure and system(s) to manage and store large-scale, social science research project data to facilitate and support research team operations. They will design and implement these systems across the research team and other workflows as needed to ensure accurate, timely, and optimized data storage, delivery, and automated processes. The Senior Research Data Analyst must have a demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.

Core duties will include:

  • Lead, develop, maintain, test, analyze, and evaluate data management systems for multiple, large-scale social science research projects.
  • Perform data analysis and modeling using machine learning techniques including natural language processing.
  • Assemble large, complex sets of data that meet research functions and cross-functional team requirements.
  • Identify, design, and set up a system to implement internal process improvements including re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability, optimizing data storage and delivery, and automating manual processes.
  • Create complex charts and databases, perform statistical analyses, and develop graphs and tables for publication and presentation.
  • Building required infrastructure for optimal extraction, transformation and loading of data from various data sources using Google Cloud, Python and SQL technologies for relational database management systems.
  • Building analytical tools to utilize the data pipeline, providing actionable insights into key research performance metrics including operational efficiency.
  • Working with research leads to supporting data infrastructure needs while assisting with data-related technical issues.
  • Serve as a resource for non-routine inquiries such as requests for statistics or surveys.
  • Participate in project planning and strategic thinking for overall growth and direction of research teams’ projects and activities.

To be successful in this position, you will bring:

  • Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience. Experience in a quantitative discipline such as economics, finance, statistics or engineering.
  • Ability to direct the work of others, for jobs requiring supervision.
  • Relevant subject matter knowledge.
  • Substantial experience with MS Office and analytical programs.
  • Excellent writing and analytical skills.
  • Ability to prioritize workload.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent analytic skills associated with working on unstructured datasets.
  • Ability to build, implement, and troubleshoot processes to optimize data transformation, management, data structures, and metadata.
  • Graduate or undergraduate degree in information systems, informatics, statistics, computer science, data engineering/science or another quantitative field.
  • Experience in social science, namely education/education policy, producing and managing large-scale, multifaceted academic research.
  • Experience working in social science research, including leveraging data for policy and for producing academic research.
  • Demonstrated understanding and experience using software and tools such as all g-suite, google workspace, Google Cloud, coding platforms (STATA, R, Python, etc.), GitHub, Globus, Confluence.

The expected pay range for this remote position is $113,000 to $130,000 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
